Student Leadership Policy
Rationale
Leadership programs provide optimum opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills, model school values, and display pride in themselves and the school community.
Aims
- To provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills
- To provide opportunities for Year 6 students to build their leadership skills by modelling appropriate behaviour and expectations throughout the school.
- To provide opportunities for Year 6 students to take on roles of responsibility within the school.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Commanders & Captains
- Commanders are the student leaders and the main student voice within the school.
- Commanders are ambassadors for the school and are expected to help around the school in areas such a guiding visitors, looking after students assisting a staff member and being generally helpful.
- Commanders may be involved in the enrolment and welcome procedures for new students.
- Commanders are responsible for the running of musters, including special event Musters, STAR behaviour counting, fitness rotations, Flags, Discos and Talent Muster, fundraising and any other roles that arise throughout the year.
Lieutenants
- Lieutenants are the school sport leaders.
- Lieutenants are ambassadors for the school. They main responsibility is to represent the school in all sporting events.
- Lieutenants are responsible for the organisation and running of the sports shed, organisation of sporting teams, fitness, ship events, promoting their ship and STAR behaviour counting.
PROCEDURES
The election process will occur in the year prior to the students commencing their final year of primary school. Elections and a promotions muster will be held in Term 4 to ensure all commanders and lieutenants are ready to commence their roles the following year.
ELECTION PROCESS – Commanders & Captains
- Students nominate for Commander Position by writing a nomination letter to the Principal.
- Nomination letters are assessed by Principal and Teacher responsible for Student Leadership.
- Successful candidates are notified by letter of their acceptance to nominate for Commander.
- Candidates produce poster and badges for the week leading up to silent ballot.
- Candidates prepare a short 1-minute speech to voting body on their attributes and suitability for the role.
- All students from year 3-6 vote in a secret ballot using 3, 2, 1.
- Administration staff to tally results.
- Leadership team, Year 6 Team Leader and relevant teachers make the final decision for the eight Commanders based on the election results, their knowledge of the students and any other factors.
- The 8 successful candidates are announced at Promotions Muster following election process.

- From the 8 elected Commanders all teaching staff vote using 3, 2, 1.
- Administration staff to tally results.
- The two students who receive the most votes are elected as School Captains.
- School Captains are announced at Promotions Muster following election process.
ELECTION PROCESS – Lieutenants
- Students nominate for Lieutenant Position by writing a nomination letter to the Principal.
- Nomination letters are assessed by Principal and Teacher responsible for Student Leadership.
